Garlic is a cultivated plant and came to Europe from the steppe regions of Central and South Asia via the Mediterranean. Its wild progenitor is considered extinct.
Garlic probably moved north with the advancing Romans and in later - but not
much later - years it spread through cultivation in monasteries. By the end of
the 8th century, it was mentioned in the Capitulare de villis (in chapter 70),
published under Charlemagne, as one of the plants to be cultivated.
